Rekawa Lagoon & Beach is the located in Tangalle. It is home to one of the most important sea turtle and many other animals colony in the Southern Province. This lagoon is mostly surrounded by mangroves and the main source of freshwater supply is through the Kirama-Oya River. One of the main sources of income for the residents in this area is shrimp fishery. The white shrimp is the most important shrimp species found in this lagoon when it comes to trading purposes. In this lagoon mangrove species such as Lumnitzera racemosa, Bruguiera gymnorhiza, Avicennia marina, and Aegiceras corniculatum have been discovered and there are a variety of fish, crustaceans and birds to which this mangrove is home.
Rekawa attracts ecotourists the most. This calm and uncrowded beach is known for being a natural "nursery" of rare sea turtles (leatherback and green) that lay their eggs on the coast. Which makes the tours to these nesting places the main "attraction" of Rekawa. This is one of the best places for such ecotours.Tours are usually offered from Tangalle and take place in the evening, which also allows you to look at the incredible ocean sunset that makes the golden sand on the coast shine especially beautifully. The best period to look at turtles on Rekawa is from January till April, when the nights are accompanied by a very bright moon that makes the process more accessible to watch.
The lagoon possesses an expensive variety of flora and fauna. Rekawa lagoon may be a stretch of inland water encircled by mangroves and filled with plant and animal life. Being thus getting ready to the ocean lends for an interesting system, and it`s fascinating to immerse yourself in it. The laguna is nice for Kayaking and Canoeing and is filled with birds and fish and you`ll sometimes spot a water monitor. Once you get your hands on Canoeing, you`ll be wandering on this shallow waterbody with several mangroves and natural scenery.
